EverBank Jacksonville, Florida: Over 60 People Leap From Roof

By: J.E. Miller
Date: May 17, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

GIANTS MASCOT MR. BIGGS
CENTER OF PHOTOGRAPH
WHY WOULD ANY SANE PERSON LEAP OFF A 32 STORY BUILDING (a total of 447 feet)?

The answer: To raise charity funds for the Boy Scouts of America, North Florida Council.

Three years ago, one of the Boy Scout executives in Jacksonville, Florida, heard about a national fundraiser titled, "Over The Edge."  Over the Edge contracts with a local tall building to allow specially outfitted individuals to rappel down from the top of the building.  In return, the charity receives the majority of the donated funds.

ACTION NEWS TRACYDOTCOM
For a $1000 donation, anyone can reserve a position to rappel down the building.  The way the scout fundraiser website is arranged, you do not have to pay the entire amount at one time.  You can actually make deposits toward next year's jump.   In fact, if you have friends or in this case enemies who would like to see you squirm as you plunge down the building, they can get in the act and make a donation toward your demise. LOL  If you happen to collect more than the $1000 donation required, the scouts will gratefully accept the overage.

Over the Edge staffers arrive the day before the event for setup and testing of the safety equipment.  The insurance company requires this level of security and safety before the first person can participate.  Then, celebrity jumpers, starting with the Jacksonville Sharks mascot (CHUM) begin the long trek down the building.

The event is not just about the rappelling, but the crowds below watching.  By lunchtime, hundreds lined the streets to watch.  Local sports figures and celebrities were on hand to meet and greet.  The Jacksonville Jaguars, the Jacksonville Sharks, and the 2013 ABA National Champions Jacksonville Giants, including Head Coach Kevin Waters and Players Jermaine Bell and Anthony Jackson, were in attendance for photographs and giveaways or just to answer questions about their upcoming seasons.

The Jacksonville Giants mascot "MR. BIGGS" made the jump this year.

THE PROCESS

Your jump begins with registration.  A greeter welcomes you and signs you in for your rappel time.  Next, you are fitted with a new tight-fitting harness which grabs you in all the wrong places.   Do not mind the tightness of this equipment lest you wish to plummet to earth.   Finally, a young helper will fit your head with a blue brain container that they refer to as your helmet.  One could easily surmise that this helmet is only for show.  Once the safety equipment has been pulled, yanked, adjusted and re-tightened, you are whisked to the roof by elevator.   The last step in the process is attaching your harness to two ropes which extend to the bottom of the building.  You are then slowly lifted into position and given the final instructions before you have control of your fate and are heading down to earth.

LANCE ARMSTRONG: U.S. POST OFFICE VERY VERY MAD - $120 Million Worth

By: Joseph Miller
Date: April 22, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

It was easy to predict that investors, sponsors, teammates, and even fans would be angry enough to sue Lance Armstrong.   His drug use and ill-gotten gains because of these performance-enhancing drugs hurt maybe as many or more people than his LIVESTRONG charitable foundation helped.

Now, the United States Department of Justice is joining the race against Armstrong.  The Department has just filed a criminal complaint against Armstrong.  Armstrong's $40 million sponsorship from the USPO could develop into triple damages or $120 million.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

J.T.'S COLLEGE GRADUATION PARTY ON FRIDAY, APRIL 26,
AT 6:00 P.M. AT EPISCOPAL HIGH SCHOOL.
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED!

(L-R) J.T.'s Mom Carmen, B.L. Miller, J.T. Townsend, Host Richard Miller
The public is invited to J.T.'s college graduation party on Friday, April 26th, at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.   Episcopal High School is opening "The Buck Student Center" on campus for the party.  There will be specialty food trucks and a cash bar.  This is a party just for J.T. and his friends, family and supporters.  This event is not a part of J.T.'s foundation, but instead, this is a celebration of his college graduation.  All monetary gifts will be given to J.T. personally.  This event is an excellent way to show J.T. how appreciative we are of his efforts in our community.

Read how J.T. supports Jacksonville.  http://www.jttownsendfoundation.org/category/read-how-jt-has-given-back/
-------------------------------------------------

Jerry Townsend, Jr. (J.T.) was born in 1987 in Jacksonville, Florida, and received a scholarship to attend Episcopal High School.  While at Episcopal, he received many awards and recognition, including the Episcopal High School Foundation Award for Excellence of Character and the Best Athlete of the Episcopal High School Class of 2005.  J.T. wears two rings:  a 2005 state championship ring on the right hand and an Episcopal High School Senior Class ring.  J.T. is a true fan of the Florida State Seminoles with a cell phone ring tone of the Florida State chant to prove it.

In October of 2004, while playing football for Episcopal High School against Bishop Kenny High School, J.T. suffered a spinal cord injury.  J.T.’s mother stated, “It was not an accident, but an incident.  He was chosen.”  However, despite his injury, J.T. has made incredible strides.  He gives thanks to God and his mother Carmen as well as the entire Jacksonville community for helping him through his ordeal.  With the continuous physical therapy that has become a part of his life since it is important to keep his body flexible and strong, he is very pleased about the progress that has been made as a result of that persistence.

At a special ceremony in 2009, J.T.’s football and basketball jerseys were retired for his contributions when he played in the positions of wide receiver on the football team and forward on the basketball team.  While he played both football and basketball in high school, J.T. had also played baseball as a pitcher and catcher.  Now, with his injury, J.T. enjoys watching all sports both live and on television.

With a sports management degree from the University of North Florida, J.T. plans to continue to give back to the community through his foundation.

Former Jacksonville Giants Photographer Chris Fowler Needs Lung Transplant

GIANTS BERNARD RIMMER COMPETES IN
ABA ALL-STAR DUNKING CONTEST
BY: PHOTOGRAPHER CHRIS FOWLER

By: Joseph Miller
Date: April 16, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

Former Race Car Driver and Professional Photographer Chris Fowler In Need of Lungs

For a man who faced death at every turn (racing cars), Chris Fowler now is facing his toughest foe - his own lungs.  Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at six months of age, Chris has struggled most of his life.  Most medical professionals would have given Chris 18 to 20 years to live.  Now 37 years old, Chris is one of the oldest survivors (always a winner) of this disease.  But, now his time has run.  Today, Chris describes his dilemma:

"After 37 wonderful years, my lungs have decided they can't take anymore, I am now officially on the lung transplant list! The waiting begins, have to stay healthy as possible while waiting for new lungs. Average wait is about 18 months, please keep me in your thoughts and prayers! :). Looking forward to another 37 years!! :)"

During the Jacksonville Giants' first season in the ABA, Chris stood proudly at the sidelines snapping photo after photo.  The image above is still named as one of the top two images ever captured by a Giants' photographer.

2013 ABA National Championship - Don't Miss It

By: Joe Miller
Date: April 14, 2013

Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville Giants vs.North Dallas Vandas
Vandals (Orange) vs. Giants (Blue)

"The Citizens of Jacksonville better head on down to the Jacksonville Veteran's Memorial Arena today, or they will miss one of the most exciting games in ABA history.  The City of Jacksonville, Florida, has never held a National Basketball Championship, or for that matter, has even had a team compete for a National Basketball Championship here in Jacksonville." - Ron Sholes, Team Owner of the Jacksonville Giants, 2012 National ABA Champions.

------------------------------------------

My brother, David, says that ABA basketball is "street basketball."  For years, the ABA has been the recipient of unfounded criticism.

I say it is real basketball with undiscovered talent on the court and true character off the court surrounded by family entertainment that equals what the NBA has to offer.  The Giants have surpassed any other professional team in Jacksonville, Florida, with their participation with charitable fundraisers and especially with regard to promoting education.  Over the past three years, the Giants have mentored or advised most of the students in Duval County through their school visitation and promotions.  In the first year alone, the State of Florida recognized the Giants for its contributions to education and gave the team the State Education Award that only two other companies in Jacksonville have been awarded.  It is long overdue for the City of Jacksonville and its surrounding areas to show the Giants the support the team so richly deserves.

If you missed last night's GAME ONE of the 2013 ABA National Championship, then you missed a truly amazing game.  Unlike the NBA, the ABA has scoring rules which allow a team to establish scoring records with over 100 points.   Even still,  you have to earn those points.  Undoubtedly, those points are not easy to attain.  And, every game is truly exciting and entertaining.  I guarantee that you and your family will leave as Giants fans.

The speed and agility of ABA players is unmatched.  What the NBA calls the "fast-break" is ABA basketball.  ABA players continuously run, shoot, and score. And, in the case of a National Championship, they push and shove just short of fouling.  Both teams want to win and will do just about anything to achieve this goal.   The 2013 Championship has gotten extremely physical, which gives it the "WOW" factor.  A little shove or push to a player running a 6 second 50 yard dash who is airborne could spell disaster but it happens over and over.
Giants Play by Play broadcaster Richard Miller
and Team Owner Ron Sholes (r)

I have been associated with the Giants ever since Team Owner Ron Sholes told me he was starting a team and asked me to help get it started.  He told me he had hired Head Coach  Kevin Waters, but, at that time, that was the extent of our staff.  When I asked Sholes about when he planned to buy a team, he replied that he had just signed the paperwork.  I thought, "What?  Who would attempt such a feat with no safety net?"  Later, after planning the details with Sholes and Waters, my answer was definitive: "Ron Sholes!"

Sholes said Coach Waters had "a special formula" which might deliver a National Championship team in one year.  I thought to myself, "Yeah right.  I should leave right now."  But, Sholes' convincing attitude made me stay for the show.  It turned out that Coach Waters' "secret recipe" worked, and the Jacksonville Giants made it into the Final Four and then competed for the 2011 ABA National Championship its first year.  In 2012, the Giants won the 2012 ABA National Championship.

After the Giants won the 2012 National Championship, the prospective recruits who showed up at our door to try out for Season Three had talent beyond our imagination.  With so many players possessing such talent, we knew that the selection process would be highly difficult.  In the end, it was sad to see so many players from our 2012 National Championship team leave, but the roster size does not allow for a team of 60 players.  Several of the 2012 players moved to a Giants practice squad, but the remainder moved on to other teams or left the ABA altogether.

MR. BIGGS (MASCOT OF GIANTS) PROMOTES OUR
NEWEST SPONSOR ACUVUE CONTACT LENS

In last night's battle between the Jacksonville Giants and the North Dallas Vandals, the Giants lost one of their top forwards and former NBA player Damone Brown.   Sadly, Brown retired to stretcher after the half when he tore an Achilles tendon.  This injury takes Brown off the roster for today's game.  Brown's facial expression showed his physical pain, but mostly his disappointment in not being able to compete with his teammates.

The Jacksonville Giants (named for first season's players Jermaine Bell (7'0") and former Giant Jason Bennett (7'4")) are now flush with additional Giants like Gertavian Blake (6'11"), Bernard Toombs (6'10"), Damone Brown (6'9"),Terry Martin (6'6"), and Courtnay Brown (6'4").  But, it is the six-foot or less players like Anthony Jackson, Ed Horton, and Tony "Super" Hooper that make what you see on the court - magic.  Horton is a machine - a piece of work that astounds the viewer.  He is one of the only Giants players who wears a mouth guard, and it is fortunate for him.  In nearly every game, his face and head come crashing down on the court after a slip attempting to steal a ball or after a purposely placed shove.  This fall would send most players to the bench, but Horton leaps back up, shakes it off, and gets back into the fray.

The Giants acquired Anthony Jackson after he thrilled the stands as a competing player at the 2010-2011 season ABA All-Star Game.  No one has ever told  Jackson and Hooper that they cannot dunk on any BIG GUYS so they continually thrill and amaze with HUGE dunks and artistic self-styled scoring.  The taller players just stand stunned at the raw talent of Jackson and Hooper.  Their speed accelerates as they move toward the hoop and mysteriously place the ball in the hoop.  Don't take your eye off their movements for one second or you'll miss their scores.

Jermaine Bell, the Giants tallest player, not only dunked his way to one of the top three high-scorers of the game, but he was hitting his 15, 20, and 25 ft. shots with such ease that it made it look easy.   Bell just loves the game and his newborn son.  His happiness is obvious when he cuddles his son after the game.

The break-out player of the night for the Giants was Bernard Toombs.  After every score, he would strike a muscle pose or pretend like he was eating the Vandals.  You could tell that basketball is his passion and that he was enjoying this exciting moment in time.

NORTH DALLAS VANDALS - 2013 ABA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS
(L-R BACK ROW) SARAH GAYLOR
(SECOND FROM RIGHT - BACK ROW) HEAD COACH TYLER GATLIN

Coached by a 25-year old Tyler Gatlin and more surprisingly Sarah Gaylor, a woman assistant coach (unusual for the ABA), the North Dallas Vandals (21-2) did not arrive at this Championship without weapons.  In fact, it was the Vandals that delivered the Giants only loss this season.  Its roster is stuffed full of outstanding talent who can dunk and hit those three-pointers.  This talent was demonstrated when they scored 17 points against the Giants in just six minutes to come up just one point shy of a tie and two points short of the win.

Though this is the Vandals' first time competing for the National Championship, everyone knows that teams find extra strength and motivation to knock out last year's National Champions and take the title.

Today's game will be played in the outstanding Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena at 5:00 p.m.  Get there early to get the best seat, and let the young ones play in the free bouncy houses in front of the Arena.

The basketball court will be adorned with several beautiful new court decals provided by the Giants newest sponsor and television broadcast partner Vistakon Acuvue.  Its management team was not just impressed by the Giants but also by the talented dance team directed by Miss Pam Masters and her Showtime dance company and the extraordinary Giants Mascot MR. BIGGS.

If the Jacksonville Giants win tonight, the team will be named the 2013 ABA National Champions.  If the Vandals win, the tournament will continue, and a third game will be played in the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena Monday night.

Either way, you do not want to be that person in your office on Monday morning that listens to others discuss the fabulous Giants vs. Vandals game that took place on Sunday night.  Join the Giants and bring your friends and family for this 2013 showdown.

At today's game, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts in full uniform will be admitted free of charge.

MILLER ON SPORTS WITH HOST RICHARD MILLER will discuss the details of the Championship on Tuesday night on 1010XL from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.
The Game will be televised LIVE on CW17 with Richard Miller providing the play by play.

Morning Miller on Sports: Things you should know

MAYOR ALVIN BROWN AND THE JAGUAR'S ROAR

By: Richard Miller

The Morning Miller
Wednesday, April 10

THERE ARE OVER 500 MORE STORIES TO READ AT Miller on Sports.

You Should Know: The No. 10 Washington Redskins jersey was the best-selling in the NFL from April 1, 2012, to March 1, 2013. Not only did Robert Griffin III have the best-selling jersey for the fiscal year, it is the best-selling NFL jersey in league history. In his first season with the Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning's No. 18 placed second behind RG3.

Jaguars Bite of the Day: Left tackle Eugene Monroe, via the Florida Times-Union, said he's not focused on a new contract. His rookie deal expires after this season. When asked on Tuesday if he would move to right tackle if Eric Fisher or Luke Joeckel were drafted second overall, Monroe responded with: "I'm a left tackle. I've been playing left tackle since middle school."

College Nugget: The University of Connecticut was too tough for the Louisville women's basketball team last night. The Huskies overwhelmed the Cardinals, 93-60. It was the largest blowout in a women's NCAA title game and marks UConn's eighth national championship.

Strange Thought of the Day: What if the Jaguars make the playoffs in 2013?

Tweet of the last 24 hours: @DragonflyJonez "Bout to watch Kareem Abdul Jabbar dive." Abdul-Jabbar, a six-time NBA MVP, has been competing on the ABC celebrity diving show Splash.

Stat(s) of the Day: Warchant.com reported Tuesday morning that Florida State will host Notre Dame in football during the 2014 season. The last time Notre Dame played in Doak Campbell Stadium was a 34-24 Irish win in 2002.

Video of the Day: It would have been okay if LeBron James had been awarded the NBA MVP a month ago. Early in last night's Bucks game, LBJ alley-ooped to himself off the glass.

-----------------------------------------

You Should Know: The Louisville Cardinals, the top seed in the NCAA Tournament, won the men's college basketball title over Michigan, 82-76, last night. The back-and-forth contest is the third national championship for the Cardinals. They were led by guard Peyton Siva, 18 points, and star role player Luke Hancock, 22 points with 5 of 5 from three. The Wolverines were up by as many as 12 in the first half over the resilient Louisville squad. Last night's game will, undoubtedly, go down as one of the best NCAA title games.

Jaguars Bite of the Day: The Jacksonville Jaguars officially announced the signing of wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi on Monday. The deal is for two years and about $4.7 million. Massaquoi, a former Georgia Bulldog, has 118 career receptions through four NFL seasons. He played in nine games last year while battling hamstring and knee injuries with the Cleveland Browns.

Strange Thought of the Day: I wouldn't be completely shocked if the Miami Heat fall to the New York Knicks, winners of 12 straight games, in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Tweet of the last 24 hours: @NormanChad (Norman Chad, syndicated sports columnist) "Less than a week ago, I was at Dairy Queen and Spike Albrecht took my order." Michigan guard Albrecht came off the bench last night to score 17 points and make four out of five three-pointers. He was trending on Twitter.

Stat(s) of the Day: It's expected that Mohamed Massaquoi will vie for the third WR spot behind Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts III. Massaquoi, 26, has missed 10 games in his four NFL seasons. He has seven receiving touchdowns from his time with the Browns.

Video of the Day: Kenan Thompson brought his spot-on impression of Charles Barkley to Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update.

Rutgers Coach Rice's Firing Puts Heat On Athletic Director Tim Pernetti

By: J.E. Miller
April 5, 2013 7:00 a.m.
Updated April 5, 2013 6:00 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

Today, at 6:00 p.m., it was reported that Rutgers University fired its Athletic Director Tim Pernetti.

When you watch the video of Rutgers Basketball Head Coach Mike Rice chest bumping, smacking, and even throwing basketballs at players, it looks ridiculous.  How can a Head Coach at that level create his own form of one man dodgeball with his players?

That was then, and this is now.

If you read Rutgers President Barchi's statement below, it is clear that the University took a firm stand in the Fall of 2012 and fined Rice $75,000 for bad behavior and even sent him to anger management classes after viewing and learning about these infractions.  But, now that over a million viewers have criticized Rice's actions, it is impossible to leave the issue alone or at least Rutgers felt the weight of the bad press was too much to bear.

It would be interesting to know statistically what men think of his actions vs. women (specifically soccer moms).  It would be even more interesting to know what his players thought of his actions.  Maybe the players are saddened by Rice's departure, and the school should provide counseling to its players.

First and foremost, my understanding of the mission of a Head Coach is to develop a winning team from an array of talented individualistic players, and (hopefully) build character.

Universally, critiquing the Head Coach has always been the Athletic Director's responsibility. But, overall NO ONE has ever been allowed to second guess the techniques of a head coach, especially a college president.  Winning was and always has been the gold standard for judging or retaining a coach in any athletic sport.

Now, with social media, video phones, and the political correctness of the world, one can only imagine that the day is coming where every college player will receive a trophy, and a nurturing, caring, and loving coach will be hugging his or her way to a championship.  Maybe the national championship team will take a second place to the Coach's Award for "Best Hugger in the Nation."

In the case of Rutgers, it should be easy to predict that Athletic Director Tim Pernetti will lose his job within the week.  Clearly, he must have defended Head Coach Rice in the Fall, but now this black eye for Rutgers will hurt for some time to come.  Notably, ESPN reported that Pernetti got Rutgers the "BIG 10" deal, and that made Pernetti bullet proof.  But, when making decisions, most Board of Trustees follow the old adage of "What have you done for me lately?" Clearly, this has torpedoed Rutgers University as a whole.

Pernetti - You're Fired!

Statement by President Barchi Regarding Mike Rice

April 3, 2013

Rutgers University has a long and proud history as one of the nation’s most diverse and welcoming academic institutions. Coach Rice’s abusive language and actions are deeply offensive and egregiously violate the university’s core values.

When video excerpts of basketball practices were reviewed last fall by Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, he immediately notified me and sought the advice of internal and outside counsel.  The university hired an independent investigator to look into this matter thoroughly. Based on the external investigator's findings and recommendations, Tim and I agreed that Coach Rice should be suspended, penalized $75,000 in fines and lost salary, ordered to undergo anger management counseling, and put on notice that his behavior would be closely monitored. Tim Pernetti also made it clear to Coach Rice that there would be zero tolerance for additional infractions. Tim kept me fully apprised and I supported his actions.

Yesterday, I personally reviewed the video evidence, which shows a chronic and pervasive pattern of disturbing behavior. I have now reached the conclusion that Coach Rice cannot continue to serve effectively in a position that demands the highest levels of leadership, responsibility and public accountability. He cannot continue to coach at Rutgers University.  Therefore, Tim Pernetti and I have jointly decided to terminate Mike Rice’s employment at Rutgers.

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

The 2012 ABA National Champions Jacksonville Giants will host the 2013 ABA National Championship and Final Four, which will take place next week (April 11-14) in Jacksonville, Florida.

"We are proud to have been selected by the ABA to hold this annual highlight of championship basketball," commented Jacksonville Giants Team Owner Ron Sholes.

In July 2010, Sholes started the Giants at the beckoning of Head Coach Kevin Waters.  Waters recognized that having a fast-breaking team could improve the odds of competing for a national championship.  With Sholes support and the selection of players who could execute on Waters' strategy that first season, the Giants captured a 3rd place finish in the ABA National Championship series.  In season two, the kinks were worked out and after experiencing the pressures of a national championship, Waters made Jacksonville history by bringing the first basketball national championship back to this city.  "It was a lot of hard work and long hours, but it all paid off in the end," said Head Coach Kevin Waters.

On Thursday, April 11, 2013, at 5:00 p.m., the 2013 National Championship will kick off at the University of North Florida (UNF) Arena.  Game two of the series will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the UNF Arena that same evening.  The third game in the series will take place on Saturday, April 13th at 5:00 p.m., at UNF.   The final game (The National Championship) will be on Sunday, April 14th, at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.   Tickets are as low as $20 for the Championship and can be purchased from the Giants office or through Ticketmaster.

When asked about the series, Team Owner Sholes stated, "We are going to show the three other competing teams Jacksonville, Florida, at its best.  We have plenty of sponsors who have promised to provide food and other services to these talented young men who are competing for the 2013 ABA National Championship."

On Tuesday, April 9, 2013, listen to the "Miller on Sports" radio show on 1010XL (92.5 FM) from 9:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. for updates on the 2013 National Championship.  At that time, we will delve into what it takes to compete in an ABA National Championship.

Interview With ABA Jacksonville Giants Currye Todd

By: Richard Miller

1010XL On-Air Radio Host
(Every Tuesday night 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.)

WATCH CURRYE TODD’S SEASON TWO (2011-2012) – GAME ONE BUZZER BEATER MADE DECEMBER 2011.  The ball was inbounded by Retired NBA Star Christian Laettner.

Interview with Currye Todd, starter for the Jacksonville Giants ABA Basketball Team in Jacksonville, Florida.

Q: You're known as a three-point specialist. How many threes will you shoot in a  day?

A: Just in shoot-around and the drill work Coach has us do, I'd say I get up anywhere between 150 to 200 shots a day.

Q: Can you remember your best shooting night, either in high school, college or the pros?

A: I can't say one off the top. If I did, it would be going off based on points alone. I was at Lamar University, and they had me playing the four. They had a big man and they wanted to step him out. I shot the ball really well that game. Ended with about 28 (points). It was a big game in the conference. It was really needed.

Q: Which Giants player, if any, has the best chance of out-shooting you in a game of HORSE?
A: Courtenay Brown.

Q: Really? Have y'all played any shooting games?
A: No, Courtenay is the second best shooter, if not the best shooter on the team.

Q: Better than you?

A: Just shooting the ball and nothing else to do. As far as dribbling or playing defense. If you let Courtenay sit there, he will hit them all day.

Q: You became a star after sinking the game-winning three in December of 2011 against the Gulf Coast Flash. Has that final play been in your dreams?

A: That was more of my introduction to Jacksonville. Letting people know what kind of player I am.  I've been a good player my whole career. It was my first game in Jacksonville, first game of the season and first game playing at home. It was a great way to end it.

Q: You're a captain for the defending ABA champions. Have you been a captain before?

A: I've never been a captain. I'm a leader anyway even if I'm not a captain. I try to help the team and lead. I'm a natural leader. Coach Waters granted me the opportunity and (I) ran with it.

Q: Jacksonville is guard-rich at the point. With the skill sets of Ed Horton, Tony Hooper, Kevin Thomas and Anthony Jackson, build your ideal point guard.

A: If you can combine all four of those guys, you have a hell of a point guard. If you combine Anthony's scoring with Tony's ball-handling, KT's decision-making and Ed Horton's size, that's a tremendous player.

Q: Your long-time teammate at Lamar University and in the ABA Lamar Sanders is now playing professionally in Japan. Is it strange not playing with him this season?

A: It's kind of funny. He's like a brother to me. We've been playing together for a long time. We go back to high school. We played AAU together. We played high school against one another. After that, we went to the same junior college. Then, we went to Lamar University. We then went to Texas (Southeast Texas Mavericks). And now here. We played together for eight consecutive years.

It's kind of different. When I left home, he was usually with me. I was never away from home without him. It's been different this year. I wish him well on his journey. I'm sure he thinks the same.

Q: Do the two of you keep in touch?

A: Yeah, we still talk. We can't talk like we want to with the different time zones. I got up this morning and had an appearance at nine. I had to get to a middle school. I posted something on Instagram about how I'm just waking up. He commented on it how he was just fixing to go to bed. It's all fun, but it is hard to catch up.

Q: You've won three ABA championships - two with the Southeast Texas Mavericks and one last year with the Giants. Which one means the most?

A: They're all pretty equal. You get the same feeling after each win. You're winning it with a different group of guys. That's what it's about. It's not about the ring. It's about you and your group of guys. Bonding, fighting battles with them. Now you reach that goal that was set at the beginning of the season. That's a great feeling.

Q: It's your second season with the Giants. Head Coach Kevin Waters has talked about the talent level of this year's roster. But is it more than simply talent with your teammates?

A: This team has a lot of versatile players. You can basically put people into different positions. Damone Brown, he's been around. He helps lead, and the young guys follow.

I believe last year's team was more physical and aggressive. We bonded as a family last year. That's what we had to do this year. With that, we'll easily take the championship again.

Q: An early-season topic was the level of chemistry. Can the chemistry still improve?

A: Nah, you can still sense some stuff here and there. Once we are on the court, we're all brothers. We go out there and compete. In practice, we compete and fight hard. It's all love here.

Q: To your knowledge, how many plays has Waters drawn up for you to take the shot?

A: (laughs) Coach Waters loves to shoot. He thinks he's the best shooter in the gym. He likes shooters so he drew up a thousand plays for me, just to get a shot off.

Q: Do you have a favorite play where you're the shooter?

A: I can't say I have a favorite. Coach lets me play and gives me freedom on the court. That's one thing I can say I like about him. He gives me the green light to shoot when I'm ready.

Q: With the Final Four in Jacksonville in April, has there been added importance of protecting the house?

A: We shouldn't lose this championship. Playing in Jacksonville. We have protected our home court. I know the first year the Jacksonville Giants had a great home record. I think we lost one game in the two years I've been here at home. We're looking forward to it.

Jacksonville Giants Point Guard Kevin Thomas

By: Richard Miller
MilleronSports.com
1010XL On-Air Radio Host
(Every Tuesday night 9:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.)

Kevin Thomas is one of a handful of new faces for this season's Jacksonville Giants squad. He provides a selfless style of guard play off the bench. The former Murray State product shared his thoughts on this year's team, the fast-approaching ABA Final Four and how he would score on Giants center Jermaine Bell.

We spoke on Friday afternoon about basketball and more.  Here's a brief synopsis.

Q: What was your path to joining the Giants?

A: I was supposed to be with them the first season (2010-11). They had called me and wanted me that first season. I wasn't so sure. That second season they wanted me again, but that's when my baby was coming. For the third season, I knew I kept telling them I'd come (down to Jacksonville). I knew they wanted me the past two seasons, so I said I'd give it a try.

Q: How long have you known Giants Head Coach Kevin Waters?

A: Since 2006, so it's been awhile.

Q: Which one of his lessons has always stuck with you?

A: Play hard. Don't take the game for granted. This is our job. This is how we feed our families. Don't take it for granted.

Q: How was it being ingrained in Murray State basketball?

A: The defensive parts for me I liked. When I was there, we weren't really running how we do with the Giants. The defense and the ferocity were a little similar. The running part I like here so I'm glad we are playing like that. I like to get up the score and play defense.

Q: The Murray State Racers made the NCAA Tournament in 2006 and 2010. You didn't have the chance to play that deep. How close did your teams come?

A: My team lost in the conference semifinals. We had some pretty good teams though.

Q: What has been your favorite pass and/or assist this year?

A: I've had a couple nice ones. I always like when I throw the lob to Ant (Giants guard Anthony Jackson). That would be my favorite because people don't expect him to get up as high as he does. When I toss it up and he goes to get it, those are my highlights. Those would be the best for me.

Q: How do you enjoy playing in Jacksonville? Is it everything you expected?

A: Actually it's a little more. I love the fan base. I didn't expect the fan base would be able to come out to the games. Like I said, I was supposed to be here for the past two seasons. When I came this year, I didn't have the high expectations with the fans. But I've loved it. It's been great!

Q: Are you planning on being here for a few more years?

A: I'm a Giant now. If Coach wants me here. I know he likes my play. I think I've got a few fans with the way I play. I think I excite some people. If Coach wants me here, I will be here for years to come.

Q: What do you expect from the ABA Final Four? Championship, of course?

A: Oh yeah, that's always the goal with a tournament as a basketball player. You always want to win the championship. I'm excited for it, and I'm excited for the teams that should be in it. It should be the better competition of the ABA. It will be exciting.

I hope the Arizona Scorpions are in it because I have a couple friends who play for them. I know it would be exciting then.

Q: Have you kept up with the Scorpions' season? Any trash talking among friends?

A: Yeah, a little bit. I asked them if they'll be in Jacksonville. They said, "Oh yeah, we'll be there." I told them: "You know it's in our city so we gotta be here."

I know they had been No. 2 (in the ABA rankings) and they dropped down. I asked them what was going on out there. They said, "Oh man, we're just getting things together. We'll be okay for the Final Four." I said, "Alright, I hope so."

Q: Fans know that you're a pass-first player. Do you have a go-to shot?

A: Something off the pick and roll. If they don't hedge it, I like to take that shot right there. Generally it's around the top of the key. That's my favorite around the key.

Q: As a two or three-pointer?

A: Doesn't matter. As long as I get off it, I'm pretty confident about it.

Q: If you faced Giants center Jermaine Bell one-on-one, how would you score on him?

A: I would have to bring him out. As far as I can get him out. I know as quick as I am, and he's 7-feet. He can't stay in front of me. I have to knock down shots. Bring him out a little farther. I'll just go around him. And hopefully he doesn't block my shot when I get to the basket.

Q: Do you like the Giants' blue or orange jerseys better?

A: I like the orange better. I guess because it stands out a little more. The orange is pretty nice.

Q: How is your knee feeling?

A: It's gotten a lot better than I thought it would. It's probably 95 (percent). Sometimes I'll be in bed and it bothers me. The last week or so it hasn't been bothering me. It has gotten a lot better now.

Q: Favorite basketball movie?

A: He Got Game. I love He Got Game. There are a bunch of them. That's tops for me.

Q: LeBron James or Michael Jordan?

A: That's a tough one. If I had to pick one to be on my team, I would have to go with Michael Jordan. LeBron is a tough player, but I like people who win. Michael Jordan has six championships. LeBron only has one. I love to win so I'm going to have to go with MJ. He knew how to get the job done.

Q: Have you ever won a basketball championship?

A: When I was in high school (Dillard High School, Fort Lauderdale). My high school won four state championships in a row. I was a part of two of them, my junior and senior years.

Q: They won two more after you left?

A: No, they won two my freshman and sophomore years. I was on junior varsity basketball in 9th grade. My sophomore year I was a football player still so I had to play JV again. Then my junior and senior years, we won titles. We had like a little powerhouse down my way.

Q: What position did you play for football?

A: It was quarterback. My sophomore and junior years, I played lots of football.

Q: Any football stars play with you at Dillard?

A: There's a couple. They play in the NFL right now. Chris Gamble, with the Carolina Panthers, was on the 2001 team. Pat Sims was on my team. He is with the Cincinnati Bengals. Another one is Stanley McClover. He was with the Texans. He ended up hurting his knee so he's not playing.

I have a few friends who play in the NFL that I played with in high school.

Q: You keep up with those guys?

A: Yeah, I do. While Pat Sims was with the Bengals, he was only six hours away. When they played the Titans in Nashville, which is only an hour and a half away for me, he was always giving me tickets.

I would go show him support. I mean that's my high school teammate and friend right there. I try to keep up with them all the time. I was wishing they (the Bengals) would come to Jacksonville so I could catch a game. But he didn't make it to Jacksonville this year.

Q: Has Coach given the Giants the rest of the week off?

A: Yeah, I'm going to head home soon. My baby has a birthday tomorrow (Saturday) so we'll throw a little party. Should be back here Tuesday or Wednesday. So I get to celebrate my baby's birthday this weekend.

Q: Boy or girl?

A: Girl, she'll be three.
