Duval County: Sports in Jeopardy

Jacksonville, FL
By: J.E. Miller

Watch the video below about Fletcher High School wrestling and wrestling Head Coach Roy Fallon - fallonr@duvalschools.org.

Can anyone imagine a day without sports in schools?  It could happen.  This past year in Duval County, the football and basketball programs were kept intact, but every other sports program was placed in jeopardy.

Who would suggest a cost cutting program that would involve closing a sports program?

Sure education is necessary in  a student's life, but so is all of the other methods of learning.  Sports is one of those alternative methods.

Just recently, the Ritz Theatre displayed a tribute to past coaches of Duval County.  These fine men and women made this short list of stellar coaches for their superlative high school sports programs.  But they were also placed on a pedestal for instilling life lessons on their players.

While hardworking parents are spending less time with their children and almost no time with them after school (parents have to work to earn a living), these sports programs are not just an option but a necessity.

This begs the question again: Who would suggest cost cutting programs based on eliminating high school sports?
