FSU'S Bobby Bowden Cancer

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and former FSU Head Coach Bobby Bowden now admits that he once had prostate cancer.

Stating he wanted to "keep it quiet," Bobby Bowden just announced that he had prostate cancer in 2007.  His reason for keeping it quiet - he thought the press would blow up its significance and lead people to think he was dying.

His reasoning is understandable.  Everyone knows that such a revelation would damage his recruiting efforts.  Bowden was noticeably quiet and less engaged on the sidelines during the 2007, 2008, and 2009 seasons.  Then, FSU dismissed Bowden in the 2010 season.

Interestingly, Bowden says he did not tell FSU's President or the Athletic Director of his health condition when he learned of it.  Now, one can only question whether his condition had any effect on his performance during those years and whether FSU would have been more sympathetic to his plight if the AD and President had known.

Now, Bowden is acting as a spokesperson for Prostate Cancer.
