LABOR DAY BRINGS FOOTBALL

LABOR DAY 1904

Labor Day is Today - Beginning of Football Season!

It has been celebrated on the first Monday every year since President Grover Cleveland declared that day as Labor Day in 1894.  In the proposal for the holiday, it was described as:  a street parade to show the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families.  This has become the foundation of the celebrations throughout the United States.

The first Labor Day celebration in the United States has been traced back to New York City's Union Square festivities on September 5, 1882.  Originating as a celebration for the working class, it has evolved into much more today.  Now, the day marks the beginning of the academic year as well as the start of the college and NFL football seasons.

Since it is also the unofficial end of the summer season, some beach dwellers consider it the last weekend to visit the beach.  In Florida, of course, this rule does not apply!  You've also heard the phrase, "no white after Labor Day" Rule, which means put away your white shoes.  Of course, as Floridians, we create our own fashion rules since our climate demands that we keep cool even in the Fall.  With this three-day extended weekend, be safe, stay healthy, eat plenty of hot dogs, hamburgers, and baked beans, and most importantly, count your blessings and enjoy the family.
