In Major League Baseball, Mariano Rivera is known as a Closer. In baseball, a Closer is a pitcher who can be counted on consistently to get the last 3 to 6 outs in a game. Rarely do Closers pitch more than 1,000 total pitches in a season. With 602 successful closes in his career, 42 year old Rivera is considered the best in the business.
The New York Yankees count on his abilities and pay him for his success - a record $15,000,000 per year.
Besides earning a huge salary, Rivera donates a large sum of his money to charity. Every year, he donates $500,000 to the Mariano Rivera Foundation for underprivileged children in Panama and the United States.
A man's words are telling of his character. When Rivera reached his record 602 closes, he was asked to comment. He answered, "This moment is great. I'm thanking God first, my wife, my kids, my parents, and my teammates . . . ."
To Rivera, it was just another day at the ballpark.
