Fishing at the Vilano Beach Pier

by: Sarah Goodyear
Photos by: B.L. Miller

As you are headed into St. Augustine, Florida, from Jacksonville, Florida, on A1A south, be sure to stop at the Vilano Beach pier.  If you arrive in time for lunch, there are several cafes as well as a restaurant on the Intercoastal waterway that sits next to the bridge.  Additionally, if you wish to picnic, there is a brand-new Publix grocery store within 1000 feet of the pier.

On Sunday afternoon, there were several fishermen, bicyclists, strollers, families, and seniors enjoying the weather.  Unlike the Jacksonville Beach pier, the Vilano Beach pier is free.  However, it is not as long as the Jacksonville Beach pier and stretches into the Intercoastal waterway, not into the Atlantic Ocean.  For that reason, it makes for a beautiful Sunday afternoon to be able to visit the Jacksonville Beach pier for one dollar per person and then head south to Vilano Beach to stroll the Vilano Beach pier at no charge.

As you stroll the Vilano Beach pier, be sure that you are not in a hurry and take the time to talk to the fishermen and watch for the St. Augustine attraction "The Pirate Ship" as well as the boaters in the waterway.  You will also see plenty of wildlife and fishermen casting their nets.  Keep in mind that if you plan to take photographs of  historic downtown St. Augustine from the pier, you should arrive early in the morning so the sun is at your back in the East.  And, as always, take a sweater or windbreaker.  The winds can be high in this area even in the summer creating a natural air-conditioning.

The lazy seaside community of Vilano Beach is interesting in and of itself.  The small hotels and architecture will take you back to the 1960's.  It could be used as a movie set for that time period.  After visiting the pier, it is a brief drive over the Francis and Mary Usina Bridge (Vilano Bridge) into historic downtown St. Augustine.  You can actually walk or ride a bike over the bridge, but be sure you have the water supply and energy to be able to make it back to your car!

Jaguars Owners Yacht Name Is KISMET

By: J.Miller
Photos by: B.L. Miller

Yesterday, thousands of people were down at the Jacksonville Landing for the “Run 5 to Keep Kids Alive” charity race to raise funds for Wolfson Children’s Hospital.

MilleronSports.com captured the excitement and fun in images displayed on Facebook as well as in a separate article on the website and First Coast News.  Hundreds of onlookers walked the Northbank Rivewalk toward the Hyatt Regency Hotel to catch a glimpse of Jaguars team owner Shahid Khan’s yacht.  They may have been shopping since the yacht is for sale.  For a cool $112 million, this stunningly-sleek beauty can be yours.  And, you only have to put $23 million down to secure the purchase.  Sounds like a deal that is difficult to refuse.

To ensure a quick sale, Khan’s crew members were busily waxing the nearly 500 feet of chrome that surrounds the yacht.  The KISMET was built in 2007 in Germany and displays a Cayman Island flag.  “Kismet” is a noun, with two meanings (1) Islam:  the will of Allah, and (2) fate or destiny, an event or course of events that will inevitably happen in the future.  Not only is the name interesting, but also the timing of the yacht’s docking.  Since the annual boat show is open in Jacksonville, one can only suppose that Khan thinks a prospective buyer may stop by to see his yacht.

So, how big is the gas tank of a yacht that size? It will hold 55,000 gallons of fuel.  At the current cost, that would amount to a fill-up of $238,000.  So, if you buy it, can you afford to take it anywhere?

GIANT AUDIENCE WITNESSES GIANTS WIN BY MILLER ON SPORTS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

By: Sarah Goodyear
Photos:  B.L. Miller

Just when you thought that the University of North Florida (UNF) could not outdo itself by hosting an event of such magnitude as CNN’s 2012 GOP Presidential Debate, the university hosted the ABA Jacksonville Giants vs. Panama City Dream game on Friday night at the UNF Arena.  With $1.00 beer to open the evening’s event, college students as well as local Duval County students in the Giants’ educational program, entitled “Books for Baskets,” flooded the arena to see the Giants face the Dream.  Special guests included patients from the Shands Cancer Center, Military Veterans, United Way Mentors (125 in attendance), and former Jaguars football player Reggie Hayward.

And, what a wonderful dream of an evening for the Giants!  The Giants defeated the Dream with a final score of 166-103.  While the players were motivated to win another home game to give them an 11-2 record, they also displayed quite a bit of showmanship.  Antonio “RED” Lawrence won the “showmanship” award with some very impressive ball handling skills.  Additionally, Currye Todd, Anthony Lumpkin, Renaldo Norman were all hitting their long shots, proving that Head Coach Kevin Waters’ hard-nosed and stringent practices last week paid off for the team.

Mr. Biggs, the Jewels and Gems Dance Teams under the direction of Pamela Masters, the UNF Dance Team, and the spectactors cheered the Giants in this “big win” home game.  MilleronSports.com captured the game as well as its onlookers in a variety of images that can be viewed at MilleronSports on Facebook.  Host Richard Miller with Miller on Sports reported the game on 1010XL Sports Radio.

Here are the final game statistics:
Leading Scorers:  Anthony Lumpkin 26; Lamar Sanders 24
Leading Rebounds:  Jermaine Bell 16; Matt Fields 12
Leading Assists:  Sherod Harris 13; Anthony Lumpkin 5
Record 11-2
Estimated Attendance:  2,700

The next game for the Giants is at the Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena on Saturday, February 4.

MOST POINTS SCORED IN A SINGLE GAME IN ABA HISTORY - In its 7th game in the ABA, the Jacksonville Giants established the historic ABA record of "Most Points Scored in a Single Game" with a total score of 206 points.

CNN 2012 GOP Presidential Debate in Jacksonville

By: J. Miller
Photos by: B. L. Miller

PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE SET AT UNF
On January 26, 2012, MilleronSports.com captured the local flavor of the CNN 2012 GOP Presidential Debate in Jacksonville, Florida.  The debate was held in the Lazzara Fine Arts Performance Hall on the beautiful campus of the University of North Florida.  The afternoon temperature on campus was 80 degrees with clear skies and a light easterly breeze.  What wonderful Florida weather for our nation and the world to see as television cameras were set up near the University Green in front of the Fine Arts Center as well as north between the J.B. Coxwell Amphitheater and the Student Union building.

JACKSONVILLE MAYOR ALVIN BROWN

(RIGHT) JACKSONVILLE CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT STEPHEN JOOST

It was reported that over 150 news agencies from all over the world had requested media credentials.  There were over 40 satellite communication vans parked on the campus for various television stations around the country.  Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and President of the City Council Stephen Joost were meeting and greeting the public before the debate.  UNF President Delaney was not seen around the campus, although dozens of his senior staff were seen walking around to ensure that the debate and other events were on schedule and running smoothly.

CNN PORTABLE PRODUCTION BUS
There was some disruption at one point when a loud group chanted, but it quickly dispersed without request by authorities.  Of note is not what happened prior and during the event, but what did not happen.  The reaction to most large events, especially a political gathering of such magnitude, is to increase police and security to levels that tend to interrupt or at least change the overall mood of such an event.  Instead, the UNF police force should be commended.  While highly visible and obviously prepared, UNF security personnel were always smiling, mingling with the crowd, and promoting an overall secure feeling.

Undoubtedly, UNF prepared well for the national and international attention that the school and campus garnered from all the media attention.  Good show CNN, great show Jacksonville, and excellent show UNF.  Another fine initiative by former Jacksonville Mayor and current UNF President John Delaney.

UNF Head Basketball Coach Mathew Driscoll With Miller on Sports

LISTEN TO THIS INTERVIEW WITH UNF HEAD COACH MATHEW DRISCOLL.  THE LINK IS IN THE CENTER OF THE STORY.

Richard Miller, Host of Miller on Sports (a local sports talk radio show) in Jacksonville, Florida, interviews Matthew Driscoll, the Head Basketball Coach of the University of North Florida (UNF).  Watch and listen as Miller and Driscoll discuss Driscoll's background and UNF men's basketball.

In 2009, Driscoll, former Assistant Head Coach at Baylor (Baylor Bears), took over as the fourth UNF Head Basketball Coach since the founding of the UNF.  The men's basketball program played its first game in the 1992-1993 season.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Driscoll helped lead the Baylor Bears to its first NCAA Championship since 1988.  In 2007, Fox Sports conducted a nationwide survey of coaches and reported that Driscoll had been voted one of the top ten assistant coaches in the nation.

In his first year, he led UNF to a 13-18 record, 8-12 in the conference (7th overall).  His second year, the team had a 15-19 record, finishing 10-10 in the conference (6th overall).

In March 2011, UNF competed against the Belmont Bruins in the Atlantic Sun Conference.  This game was televised nationally and established the record of "the first UNF basketball game televised nationally."

(L-R) RICHARD MILLER AND GIANTS SHEROD HARRIS
Here is your water cooler news for January 26, 2012.

You Should Know – The Indianapolis Colts named Chuck Pagano, formerly the Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, as its head coach on Wednesday.  Pagano, 51, will officially be introduced today.  He’s been an assistant with Baltimore since 2008, but last year was his first as the defensive coordinator.  The main question continues to be: do the Colts keep Peyton Manning?  Sounds like owner Jim Irsay will have a decision around the middle of February.

Jaguars Bite of the Day – After Senior Bowl practice Wednesday, the Jags spoke to former Florida Gators cornerback Janoris Jenkins.  He transferred to North Alabama following two marijuana-related arrests in three months last year.  It’s not if Jenkins will get drafted in the first round, it’s more like where.

College Football Nugget – Remember when the oak trees at Toomer’s Corner (Auburn University) were poisoned by an Alabama fan during the 2009 season?  If those trees die, Auburn will replace them so fans can celebrate around them after Tiger victories.

Broadcasting Note – The new Jacksonville Suns play-by-play broadcaster Steve Kolbe arrives in town today.  He spent the last 14 years as the NHL’s Washington Capitals broadcaster.  Kolbe will be on my show at 5:45 p.m. today.  Suns fans can meet him at Friday’s Hot Stove League Social from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds.

Strange Thought of the Day – If Pau Gasol hadn’t been traded to the Lakers from the Memphis Grizzlies nearly four years ago, would he have anywhere close to the exposure he has currently?  Yeah, it’s not all that strange…

Tweet of the last 24 hours – @PaulPabst (Paulie Pabst of the Dan Patrick Show) “Celebs go to the hospital for “exhaustion”…everyone else takes a nap.”

Stat of the Day – The brother coaches – Bob, Mike and Mark Stoops – will make, for the 2012 football season, almost $6 million in salary.  Bob, Oklahoma’s head coach, agreed to a seven-year, $34.5 million contract back in September.  On Tuesday, Mike, the Sooners defensive coordinator, signed a three-year deal which will pay him $600,000 annually.  Mark, Florida State’s defensive coordinator, landed a one-year extension a week ago worth $375,000 for next year.

Link of the Day – Gregg Doyel, of CBS Sports, calls out Dana White and the UFC.

Video of the Day – Did not realize that golfer Ben Crane had a gymnastics background.

Question of the Day – In a recent interview, former NBA player Robert Horry said Lakers head coach Phil Jackson created the feud between Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.  What would have happened if Jackson hadn’t done such?  One NBA title?  Zero?

Kerwin Bell, J.U. Head Coach with Miller on Sports

J.U. HEAD FOOTBALL COACH KERWIN BELL JOINS MILLER ON SPORTS
JANUARY 25, 2012

By: Sarah Goodyear

On January 25, 2012, J.U. Head Coach Kerwin Bell joined Host Richard Miller of Miller on Sports to discuss his interview with the Florida Gators for the offensive coordinator position.  While back in Jacksonville at the campus, Bell called in to Miller on Sports for a brief afternoon interview.

Bell discussed how he recently coached alongside Bobby Bowden, the legendary former Florida State football Head Coach, at the 2012 Battle of Florida All-Star game last Saturday in Boca Raton, Florida.  J.U. quarterback Josh McGregor was named his team's most valuable player.  Bell was the North's offensive coordinator, while Bowden was the head coach.   See the following link relating to the five J.U. football players who were selected to play in the All-Star game.

  http://judolphins.com/news/default/226/16238-print/

He also shared that his name has been discussed for coaching positions with the Florida Gators, Auburn, and FIU.  However, Bell noted that the Florida Gators, which is his Alma Mater, is where he would be interested in coaching if he were to leave J.U.  His contract with J.U. runs through 2015. Bell stated that, during a phone interview with Muschamp, Bell told Head Coach Will Muschamp:  "My job to me is just as important as his" with respect to leadership with these young athletes and building a college football program.

Bell is very excited about J.U. getting a band because he thinks that having their own band will be good for "the atmosphere and taking the program to the next level for a game day experience."

THE ONLY SURVIVING WITNESS TO THE BIRTH OF JACKSONVILLE

Jacksonville’s Treaty Oak
Jessie Ball DuPont Park
THE ONLY SURVIVING WITNESS TO THE BIRTH OF JACKSONVILLE
By: Joseph Miller

Woodman, spare that tree!
Touch not a single bough!
In youth it sheltered me,
And I’ll protect it now.
George Pope Morris, 1860
Jacksonville Florida’s famous Treaty Oak is the only attraction remaining of the once famous Dixieland Park amusement complex. Dwarfed while standing beside Jacksonville, Florida’s famous Treaty Oak tree (Southern Live Oak), one can almost hear the sounds of people screaming, people laughing and carnival ride noises emanating from the area that once occupied the property surrounding this enormous arboreal wonder (*Quercus* *virginiana*). The tree is the outcome of an errant acorn blown to its location by wind or dropped by a bird.  It is hard to imagine something so small could result in something so tremendously huge.
“The Giant Oak,” as it was known for one hundred years or more, is located in Treaty Oak Park on the Southbank, bordered by Main Street and the St. Johns River.  Even at the ripe old age of 200, 250 or as some suggest 300 years old, one can still touch, climb on or just picnic under a tree that has withstood the entire history of Jacksonville, Florida (founded 1832).  Actually, Treaty Oak (1760) sprouted 16 years before the founding of our country and 31 years before Cowford (1791-1832), as Jacksonville was previously known.
With a circumference of nearly 24 1/2 feet and limbs stretching out like octopus limbs from its trunk over 30 yards east and 30 yards west, the tree is massive.  A spectator cannot help but call this survivor of the past magnificent.
In fact, since the invention of still photography, many citizens of Jacksonville and hundreds of thousands of visitors have posed with this proud old photogenic natural monstrosity.  Images captured at the turn of the 19th century show small homes built directly under Treaty Oak’s canopy. If you look closely enough, small light bulbs are visible. These were part of the early electrical display in 1907, which attracted many tourists who were interested in seeing the illuminated Treaty Oak and the new futuristic advancement known as electrical lighting.

During this period, a bronze plaque attached directly to the tree contained the following statement:

The oldest and largest tree in Florida, 160 feet across under the branches. At noon, it shades a space of 190 feet in diameter. Students of forestry say it is over 400 years old. The body of the tree is over 9 feet in circumference. It was Osceola’s favorite campground and was generally used for Indian councils of war.
Though we now believe the tree to be 250 years old, this is the only mention that could be found linking Indians and especially Osceola to the tree.
In the 1960’s, developers attempted to build structures directly up to Treaty Oak’s limbs, but luckily local support, bolstered by the city’s newspaper (The Florida Times-Union), saved the tree and its surrounding property. Staff writer Roland (Pat) Moran (now deceased) gave “The Giant Oak” the honorary title Treaty Oak. It was honorary since no official record exists to describe the fact that a treaty was ever signed at Treaty Oak.
Today, buildings encroach the once hallowed grounds north of the tree. But, thanks to the quick thinking by local women’s groups and a donation from philanthropist Jessie Ball DuPont, the remaining undeveloped area south of the tree was purchased and saved for all to enjoy.
It is difficult to imagine and maybe morbid to discuss the death of Treaty Oak. But, all things die. It could happen by old age, high winds (a downblast several years ago eliminated an entire park of Jacksonville’s treasured 100 year-old oaks), hurricanes or even a devilish act.
In 1988, a crazed ex-convict fatally damaged a similarly cherished ancient 500-year-old oak tree in Austin, Texas, ominously named Treaty Oak.
Arborists did everything in their power to save the tree, but finally the tree died. Angry citizens of Austin demanded severe punishment for the criminal. The man was sentenced to nine years. Just months after his sentence and conviction, he was released from jail. The judge claimed that the man had “suffered enough” for the crime, but even so, the 500-year-old tree was still dead.
Perhaps we should take this as a lesson and erect an 8 foot fence around the park to be locked after dark? At a minimum, the city should create a three dimensional scan of Treaty Oak. Then, it would be possible to construct an artificial reproduction of Jacksonville’s natural wonder for all to enjoy for years to come. Don’t laugh at the idea. Walt Disney World created a 15-story (145 ft. tall) 50-foot wide artificial tree (Tree of Life) in its Disney Animal Kingdom park, complete with a 300 seat auditorium underneath.

In order to confirm the age of Treaty Oak, we contacted Jacksonville Electric Authority’s (JEA) Forester Michael Robinson. His nearly 30 years of experience in the field truly establishes him as an expert. Mike explained that he doesn’t work alone. JEA’s forestry team also includes Foresters Joe Dunbar and Brad Norton and Arborist Landall Demby.
Mike stated that, “Oak trees by their nature grow rapidly leading to enormous sizes and misleading age estimates. Given the right conditions, an oak can grow as quickly as five inches of diameter per year, though most grow ½ to 1 inch per year. Normally, oak trees grown in urban areas are dwarfed by their inability to extend its root line. Naturally, its roots will extend to the end of the trees canopy. But, a tree in a rural setting (as Treaty Oak used to be) and near plenty of water will extend its roots nearly twice the length of its canopy. To answer your question, most professional arborists who have examined Treaty Oak believe it to be approximately 250 years old.”
When questioned about the trees impending demise, Mike said, “Unless it is a natural disaster, Treaty Oak will probably not die in our lifetime. Given its health, continued care, and other safety precautions, I expect it will live another 100 years or more.” Mike explained that lightning rods have been placed on the tree to protect it from lightning damage and that the boardwalk installed underneath the tree canopy serves a greater purpose. “It keeps children and adults off the giant roots that are exposed above the top soil. These roots must be protected. Damaging Treaty Oaks above-ground roots could easily kill the tree.”
Interesting enough, the JEA has acted as a surrogate mother to raise thousands of Treaty Oak offspring. Mike said, “This all began in the early 1980’s, when our Forester Joe Dunbar, as a hobby, started his own personal Treaty Oak tree farm at his home."  The JEA considered it such a great idea that it adopted the program and now grows 1000 Treaty Oak saplings per year. These are given to charities and used by JEA to meet state and national legal mandates to replace every oak it must cut down for one reason or another. "I would estimate we’ve planted 5000 baby Treaty Oak trees since its inception.”
JEA donates 100 trees per year to Greenscape for its fundraising. Greenscape sells them at its annual tree sale held in March. Mike is most proud of JEA’s participation with cities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. “We drove over and presented them with 100 7-gallon Treaty Oak trees. It wasn’t much, but they were so appreciative of such a gesture. Who knows, maybe 200 years from now, there will be a giant Treaty Oak offspring in Mississippi.”
Another conservationist and tree lover Russell Skinner, owner of Skinners Tree Nursery, has grown seedlings from Treaty Oak’s acorns for years.
While visiting Treaty Oak for this story, I met a gentleman who lunches underneath the tree every day, who told this story: “A man approached me and pointed toward Treaty Oak. He was from out of town and was staying at the Hampton Inn next door to the tree. Pointing in the direction of Treaty Oak, he asked, “What is a forest doing in the center of Jacksonville.” I responded, “That is not a forest, it is one single oak tree.” He could not imagine a tree could be so gigantic.” Maybe the signage needs to be improved to inform visitors what is under that canopy. Removing three tiny pieces of the tree would expose its unique trunk.
Only three stately ancient trees remain in Florida. Be sure to include a trip to Treaty Oak for your family, friends and visitors to our fine state – and take your camera.

Did you know that Florida has the sunniest winter climate in the eastern United States and the highest average January temperatures in the nation?  It's true, and today was an example of that January weather.  While it may have been tempting to put on some winter clothing, most folks were seen in sandals, shorts, and t-shirts.

It's actually one of those days where you want to pick up the phone and call a relative or friend living in New York City or Philadelphia where the temperatures rose to a mere 33 degrees with clouds.  But, yet who has time to brag when you are headed to the beach to play volleyball, the park to walk the dog, or around the neighborhood for a bike ride to wave to neighbors while they mow the yard that seems to continue to grow!

At Jacksonville Beach today, the temperature was approximately 72 degrees with a light cool breeze.

If you are loving this weather, but don't want to brag, just share the link with your friends and family.
