Ciatrick Fason appeared on Miller on Sports radio AM 1600 - The Beach, May 29th, 2012. This is Part I of a two part series.

Ciatrick Fason attended the University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida) on a athletic scholarship. He played for Head Coach Ron Zook's 2002 to 2004 team.

His first college play in 2003 resulted in a 75 yard touchdown.

Fason was named team captain in 2004. In 2004, he rushed for 1,267 yards on 222 carries. In addition, he caught 35 passes and ran another 266 yards. His 2004 total yardage was 1,533 yards. This is the fourth best yardage total of a running back in Gator history. He received the Florida Gators' MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD for that season.

After such an outstanding year, he decided to forego his Senior year and take his chances with the NFL. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings where he played two seasons.

Tropical Storm Beryl: The Day After in Jacksonville, Florida

A frayed United States flag best demonstrates Tropical Storm Beryl's high winds and heavy rains, which ruined a fun weekend of the Jacksonville Jazz festival, community gatherings and parades.

Jacksonville, Florida, was a ghost town on Monday, May 28^th, after Beryl's heavy winds and rain drove Memorial Day travelers away from the area and kept others indoors. The good news is that no one was killed from damaging debris or cleanup afterwards. Normally, after a storm like this, an amateur with a chainsaw cuts himself while clearing a tree. A nun at St. Vincent's Medical Center informed us that the Emergency Room was "packed." When asked about the reason for the high occupancy, she replied that "it appeared to be a little of everything."

While driving downtown, we first encountered city workers repairing the Museum of Contemporary Art building's windows after a University of North Florida banner, flapping in the breeze, slapped five windows immediately breaking them. Over near Sally Industries (they make Disney-like computerized figures); a JEA crew cleared a telephone pole which buckled, hitting the building.

Next, we drove to Riverside's Memorial Park (how apropos) and witnessed two young boys skim boarding in a giant puddle left behind by the St. Johns River flooding the area. Waves still pounding the bulkhead would splash over the seawall.

Around the old Maxwell House Mansion (now owned by the Ferguson family), we photographed a dock which had been severely damaged by rising waters. Additionally, many dock boards gathered at the nearest damning area (see images).

Each passing wave loosens the planks of the dock until they are completely blown away leaving just the side rails and pilings. One city cleanup crew employee said that nearly every dock "had some noticeable damage."

He added, "We have our work cut out for us." The city workers and cleanup crews were assessing the severe damage to the river bulkhead from Riverside's Memorial Park to St. Vincent's Medical Center. The shopping area at Park and King Streets was deserted.

While crossing the bridge into Ortega, a giant sheet of rain passed over the river creating a beautiful silhouette of downtown Jacksonville. One Ortega area home had its roof and RV damaged. Sitting on the front porch, the family was making the most of it and enjoying the breeze since the neighborhood did not have electricity.

We then drove to the beach where the clouds were beginning to part and the sun began to shine. The change in the weather brought onlookers, who for the most part stayed safely off the beach on the wooden walkways. The happiest individuals of the day were the surfers and kite surfers. Though it was difficult to paddle out through the washing machine like choppy foam, once out into the larger waves, the payoff was well worth the struggle.

The beach had noticeable erosion caused by the heavy winds and high surf. Additionally, the beach was draped in large amounts of seaweed.

We were stopped briefly by the Weather Channel staff (from Atlanta, Georgia) who inquired as to whether we were from out of town. They were disappointed to discover that we were locals and could not be interviewed for their national telecast at 6:00 p.m.

The lifeguards repeatedly warned swimmers and boogey boarders that the beach was closed for swimming due to dangerous rip currents caused by Beryl. Even still, once the lifeguards were out of sight, these thrill seekers would wander back out into the ocean.

Driving back, we passed briefly through the Selva Marina area. Debris was piled 6 feet high in front of most of the homes. Apparently, these residents did not enjoy their Memorial Day off from work, but they certainly got some exercise and outdoor time. One boy, Frankie, found a silver lining in the high winds. He used his fishing rod to let out a long line attached to a kite.

At 10:00 p.m., we joyfully greeted the lights and air conditioning after the electricity was restored at our home. Thank you, JEA.

According to JEA's website (http://externalapps.jea.com/currentoutages/CurrentOutages.asp) some residents are still without electricity. But, JEA is working hard to restore power to all of these homes.

The news is that the United States, in an international friendly match, defeated Scotland at EverBank Field with a final score of 5-1 and a hat trick in front of a record crowd of 44,438 fans.

The pre-game festivities were as much fun as the on-field play. Miller on Sports captured the parties and especially the unique attire of the fans on both sides of the match.

The talk was all about Landon Donovan, who did not permit Scotland to showcase its defense as planned. Donovan, the legendary U.S. forward, scored three goals and had one assist that contributed to the U.S. men's national team's win over Scotland. Earning his third career hat trick and second in the state of Florida, Donovan led the team to victory. It only took the U.S. team three minutes to light up the scoreboard with the first goal and display the team's firepower. Other superlative fielders were midfielder Jermaine Jones (one goal; 2 assists), and midfielder Michael Bradley (one goal; 1 assist).

Undoubtedly, with the U.S. scoring two goals early in the game, the team set the pace, and after that, it was playing catch-up for Scotland. U.S. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann commented on the tempo and rhythm that the team was able to provide throughout the game. An early energetic start and then keeping that pace is what won it for the U.S. team.

Looking forward to the 2014 World Cup qualifying next month, the U.S. team with its energetic offensive maneuvering is looking quite prepared. It was incredibly noteworthy that the U.S. team was displaying such team effort even without injured Forward Clint Dempsey and Forward Jozy Altidore.

What's next? The U.S. will travel to face Brazil in an international friendly match on Wednesday in Landover, Maryland, and then will match up with Canada in Toronto on June 3. Then, it's off to the World Cup qualifying matches where the U.S. faces Antigua and Barbuda on June 8^th in Tampa and then will play Guatemala on June 12^th in Guatemala City.

For the U.S. team, it is all about staying focused and winning each game as they approach the qualifying matches.

EGG IN HAT TRICK

The use of the term "hat trick" in sports is believed to have originated in 1858. H.H. Stephenson, a bowler in cricket, was awarded a hat after he successfully took three wickets in three balls. Today, the term is most commonly used in hockey.

When a hockey player scores a third goal in one game, many of the fans celebrate the incredible feat by throwing hats onto the ice. Such a display of celebratory excitement was especially popular in the early twentieth century when men wore formal hats to sporting events.

In soccer, there are many variations of the hat trick. If a player scores three consecutive goals in one period, it is termed a flawless hat trick. However, if another player on either team scores a goal to break the chain of individual success. then it is a hat trick but not a flawless one.

The golden hat trick or perfect hat trick requires the player to score one goal by kicking with the right foot, one goal by kicking with the left foot and one goal by striking the ball with his head; such goals can be scored in any order. Obviously, the golden hat trick is very difficult and is seldom accomplished. Hats off to Landon Donovan for displaying a hat trick to Jacksonville fans at EverBank Field.

UNF HEADS TO COLLEGE GOLF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with Head Coach Scott Schroeder

For the third year in twelve years, the University of North Florida's Golf team (directed by Head Coach Scott Schroeder) is heading to the Division I College Golf National Championship. The team previously attained this level in 2000 and 2010.

Host Richard Miller interviewed UNF Head Golf Coach Scott Schroeder about his team's victory to move into the Division I College Golf National Championship.

The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee has selected the teams and individuals to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships.

The finals will be conducted May 29-June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California. Southern California is the host institution for this year's championship.

While many of us will enjoy the beaches and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, others will travel the congested roads to visit family and friends. Regardless of your plans and events, please take the time to remember and honor our fallen troops and pray for our military men and women, especially our dear friend Army First Lieutenant Ryan Timoney, a First Coast resident, who is fighting for his life after being hit by a suicide bomber on Sunday, May 20, 2012, in Afghanistan.

Initially, after being stabilized in Afghanistan, Timoney was transported to a military hospital in Germany. On Friday, May 25^th, he was flown to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for specialized treatment. NFL RESTRICTOR PLATE: KNEE AND THIGH PADS

KNEE AND THIGH PADS REQUIRED!

Remember those days when your mom would shout at you as you ran out the back door, "IF YOU DON"T WEAR A JACKET, YOU CAN'T PLAY OUTSIDE!" Maybe she said gloves, hat, suntan lotion, or change your shirt, but regardless, you were stopped dead in your tracks. Your facial expression would provide the response of displeasure. But, you knew better than to talk back, and no matter what, you complied. You could foresee the potential punishment.

Now, in a move to provide additional safety to the NFL players, NFL Commissioner Goodell has announced that in the 2013 season, the NFL will require players to wear knee and thigh pads. With the NFL head injury lawsuits stacking up, who could blame them? The lawsuits imply that the players want to be safe, right? Well, if that is true, then the NFL wants players to be even safer.

Best Selling Author Evan Money appeared on Miller on Sports on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, to discuss the NFL safety equipment requirement and "the powder puff" NFL Pro Bowl. He stated that NBA thigh padding is stronger and superior to NFL padding. Evan Money commented: "NBA thigh padding has been superior to NFL thigh padding for years. The NFL players just insist on not using it. Richard, do you know that some NFL players still refuse to wear a cup?"

Is it possible that the NFL just wants to install restrictor plates on players? Maybe this is the NFL's plan to slow down defenders and lessen impacts on offensive players. Certainly, the NFL is concerned about the head injuries caused by unprotected knees as well.

Players and the players' union are pushing back. In its response to Commissioner Goodell's statement, the spokesperson for the NFL players responded that this would have to be brought to the membership and that the union might "file' against the NFL. With this maneuver, it appears that this issue will be negotiated and maybe litigated.

All I can say is that it's a good thing the NFL players don't have to deal with my mom.

Maybe the next time Goodell will opt for full body armor. That is what the Romans required for their competitors who played in massive stadiums. But, then the Romans had toilets and running water long before we did.

Congratulations to Jacksonville Giants Game Day Experience Winner Micaela Gore. Micaela gave her friend her initial completed form and had to hurriedly gather signatures for her own entry. Good deeds do pay off!

Congratulations to the over 4,000 Duval County school students who took part in the 10^th Annual Reading Celebration, hosted by WJCT and coordinated by WJCT Marketing Director Donna Burkhart Starratt.

More than 4,000 students with their families and friends gathered at Metropolitan Park in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, for a fun-filled event. These students read twenty-five books and therefore have become members of the Superintendent's Star Reader Club. The students who met the challenge were invited to this annual celebration that honors them for their success in the 2011-2012 school year. Local businesses showered these students with discount food, coupons, and prizes for their efforts.

The Jacksonville Giants partnered with Miller on Sports to distribute t-shirts, posters, and wristbands to these high-achievers and their friends and families. Local vocalist Brittney Lawrence (Jacksonville Giants Showcase Singer, Season One; http://www.BrittneyLawrence.com) entertained the crowd with Jordan Stoddard, an extremely talented singer/guitarist who is only 14 years old. In addition, Brittney had the crowd rocking and dancing for several dance contests. These students were thrilled to have another opportunity to compete for prizes. Brittney, with her vocal talents, became the must-see show-stopper of the 2012 Reading Celebration. Chick-fil-A, Jacksonville's Fire and Rescue Department, Jacksonville Public Library, and other educational and learning sponsors contributed to make the 2012 Reading Celebration a total success. And, of course, Florida's amazingly beautiful weather made the day a perfect event for these honor students and their families.

Returning from his recent 2012 National ABA Basketball Championship win, Jacksonville Giants standout player and local favorite Antonio "Red" Lawrence dropped by to sign posters and t-shirts and pose for photographs with the students. Undoubtedly, once the announcement was made that Antonio was on the grounds, the students who are very familiar with his role in the Championship win, flooded the Giants/Miller on Sports booth to congratulate Antonio on the team's big win. What a day for Champions!

One of the highlights of the event was the awarding of special raffle prizes. Students were given passport cards that they were to have signed or marked at each booth. Once completed, those passport slips were to be dropped in the raffle basket. Returning for the fifth year, Celebrity Host Bianca deGroat attended the event. Familiar to young readers as Bianca, she is one of the “real life” kids on Cyberchase, the PBS Kids math mystery series that airs on WJCT.

The final "Grand Prize" raffle award was the Jacksonville Giants Game Day Experience, which includes four floor tickets to a Jacksonville Giants Basketball home game and VIP treatment for the group, valued at $2400.

Jacksonville Sports Mascots Leap 30 Stories For Charity

If you look up toward the roof of the AT&T building on Thursday afternoon, May 17^th, at 5:00 p.m. in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, you might not believe your eyes. Five of Jacksonville's top mascots are scheduled to scale down the building (formerly the Southern Bell building). This will include NFL Jaguars' mascot Jaxson DeVille, Jacksonville Sharks' mascot Chum, Jacksonville Giants' mascot MR. BIGGS, and Jacksonville Suns' mascot Southpaw. There is talk that Jacksonville University's mascot Dunk'n Dolphin might even make the leap.

Jacksonville's newest charity fundraiser is titled "Over the Edge." Thrill seekers, from at-home executives to CEOs, will take a leap of faith and safely rappel from the roof of the AT&T building to the ground below.

Jack Sears, District Scout Executive and CEO for the North Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America, commented, "Thursday is our Media Kickoff Day. The mascots go 'over the edge' to promote Friday's event. News agencies from television to radio will be on site to catch these furry figures as they rappel. This is our newest and most successful fundraiser for the North Florida Council Boy Scouts of America. On Friday, over 90 men and women, who have donated the necessary $1000, will rappel thirty stories down the AT&T building."

When asked about the safety of this fundraiser, Sears replied, "Last year, more women rappelled down the building than men. The Boy Scouts would not support any project that is life-threatening." He added, " I rappelled last year, and I have raised enough money to jump again this year. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a very worthy cause."

Sears said, "Legally, we must have a cutoff day, and last Friday, May 11th, was that day. Because of safety and planning issues and the serious nature of this event, we must control every detail. But, we are telling everyone who wants to participate, but did not sign up early enough, that we will be doing this same fundraiser again next year."

FAMOUS 17TH GREEN PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are known as the Practice Rounds at the PGA Players Championship. This is a time for professional players to enjoy golf, but at the same time learn every minute detail of the course. For a caddy, these three days could determine the caddy's true value. Each caddy is required to keep copious mental notes as well as written notations of the idiosyncrasies of the course. During game play, the caddy is expected to remember these details to provide his personal pro that much needed overall advantage.

The first three days are Practice Rounds for play. The results of Thursday's play is for position. Only the top 100 players are allowed to compete to Sunday's finish. And Sunday's play is for the money! Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday have to be the most fun at the PGA Players Championship at Sawgrass. If you have never seen a professional golf tournament in person, be sure to get there this week.

Be sure to drink plenty of water before you head out, and arrive early to experience the cooler mornings. Always take sunscreen. This year, the tournament will allow you to take a SILENCED cellular phone inside the grounds. If possible, take advantage of the shade of a tree. The First Aid tents are supplied with sunscreen and water. Have fun!

The J.T. Townsend fundraiser was held Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Nippers Beach Grille at Jacksonville Beach, Florida. This special event for a very worthy cause, “NIPPERS BEACH GRILLE PAR-TEE,” benefited the JT Townsend Foundation, through which J.T. Townsend provides medical equipment and assistance to others with disabilities. Pro Golfer Fred Funk and a variety of other national and local celebrities joined J.T. and his supporters and his friends for an evening of fun, food, drink, and music on the beautiful waters of the Intercoastal Waterway at Jacksonville Beach. In October 2004, while playing high school football for Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, Florida, J.T. incurred a life-altering spinal injury. J.T. has repeatedly expressed to Richard Miller (Miller on Sports) that he feels that God touches him every day and believes that the Foundation is his way to give back to the community that helped him through his difficult journey and to assist other similarly-situated individuals.

Say It Isn't So - Again!

The most recent news on the New Orleans Saints' "Injury Bounty Scandal" makes the entire debacle even worse than it was a month ago. A well-respected writer for Yahoo Sports has uncovered a document indicating that the Saints were "Circling the Wagons" to avoid scrutiny. If true, it is difficult to believe that Coach Williams will ever coach in the NFL again. Read the story below.

People may question why the City of Jacksonville will soon pay Alan Verlander, the new Executive Director of Sports & Entertainment, an annual salary of $180,000. The answer is that Alan Verlander has paid his dues and will earn back that salary and more in just a few months when he books Jacksonville's most exciting sporting event. What are these events you ask? You will just have to wait and see. Verlander has not shown his cards just yet.

One project Verlander will be working on which could bring millions of dollars to Jacksonville is the new BCS playoff of college teams. Beginning in 2012, the BCS will have a playoff system in place. Four separate venues will host the playoffs. It may be a big dream but so was Jacksonville hosting the Super Bowl - and that dream came true. With one of the largest stadiums in the nation and with the history of the Georgia-Florida game, I would still bet Jacksonville is in the running.

The Sports & Entertainment Division is responsible for overseeing Everbank Field (aka EverbankStadium), the Times Union Center for Performing Arts, the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, and the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. When these venues are not booked to capacity, the city loses money and the hotels, motels, restaurants, and citizens of Jacksonville suffer. SMG has been Jacksonville's exclusive promoter and manager for these facilities for several years. SMG's contract has ended, and city managers and a group of influential "behind the scenes" business people are reviewing submissions that may result in a new promotion company receiving the contract, a renewal of the SMG agreement, or the complete removal of a contract all together and the city assuming these services and responsibilities.

Hiring Alan Verlander may show the city's hand. Verlander has the capability to run these facilities and remove all need for an intermediary between these venues and the city.

Another responsibility of the Sports & Entertainment Division is to bring movie and production companies to the city.

According to the JEDC Sports and Entertainment Board minutes, dated March 2012, Verlander will be given additional powers and responsibilities upon his arrival. The Office of Special Events for the city has just been moved under the Sports & Entertainment Division.

Verlander has earned this job. He has been the Athletic Director for Jacksonville University for the past eight years. In that job, he earned half as much and worked tirelessly for nearly 14 hours a day. Most of his days were spent on the road with one J.U. Athletic team or another. Under his direction, J.U. has moved into a dominant position in college football - a program never before seen at J.U.

Ash Verlander (Alan's grandfather) was historically significant in our fine city. He will be remembered as one of the most philanthropic individuals in Florida. W. Ash Verlander

We use sports to escape from everyday life. Maybe it’s because our lives need a break or sports imitate life. But, unfortunately, both life and our beloved sporting events come to an end. However, when life and sports mesh, a sports fanatic is created.

In addition to being a business titan, William Ashley Verlander was truly a sports fanatic and enthusiastically kept abreast of all sporting events on a daily basis.

On Tuesday (June 16, 2009), I was fortunate enough to experience the celebration of Mr. Verlander’s life. It was the life of a sports fan and ambassador. There is no end for this man; he has touched too many lives and will always be remembered for his generosity and integrity.

At the age of 89, William Ashley Verlander passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009. The following Tuesday, June 16, 2009, I mournfully attended the funeral of this generous and humble man, whom I had never met, but heard much about over the years.

Endearingly referred to as “Ash,” he probably knew everyone in the greater Jacksonville area. More likely, they all knew him. Even if he did not know you, he would kindly approach you with a warm smile and welcoming handshake.

It has been said that his handshake was his word, and contracts were not necessary. After attending the service, I felt a sense of unqualified respect for this man, but also a special closeness. For this reason, respectfully he is Mr. Verlander, but I will refer to him as “Ash.”

My father has known Ash and his son Chris for close over 25 years. They met through the Rotary Club of South Jacksonville where they had lunch meetings together every Tuesday. Prior to attending the funeral service at Deermeadows Baptist Church, where Ash was a member, I carefully read his obituary. It qualified as the most extensive and impressive obituary I had ever read.

While perusing the obituary, it became evident Ash had made a name for himself.

At the youthful age of 15, Ash started his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Only four years later, in 1939, he graduated with a major in Industrial Management. At that time, he was the youngest to graduate from Georgia Tech. And, for the rest of his life, Ash was a Tech Man, a Yellow Jacket.

A number of locals have said that Ash Verlander is easily one of the twenty most influential people in Jacksonville’s history. A 53-year resident of Jacksonville, Ash was one of the founding members of American Heritage Life Insurance Company.

As its President for 25 years, Ash promoted the company nationwide.

Along with his business ventures, Ash led multiple organizations ranging from the Downtown Rotary Club to the Gator Bowl Association (GBA). During his time with the GBA, he was President in 1965 and was later elected into the Gator Bowl Hall of Fame. Impressively, in his honor, the Gator Bowl’s winning team receives the Verlander Trophy.

Sports were one of his obvious passions along with checking the Stock Market at 4 p.m. each day.

Ash also contributed his talents, time and money to The Bolles School, Jacksonville University (JU) and Georgia Tech. For three years, he was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at JU.

Ash received the nickname “Mr. Wonderful” by Dr. Frances Kinne, former President of JU, because she did not know what the “W” stood for in W.A. Verlander. While the “W” actually stands for William, Mr. Wonderful is a truly fitting title for such a giving man.

There is no question that his family can vouch for Ash’s deserving such a title from Dr. Kinne. Ash and his wife Alice (married 67 years) had three children. He left behind to mourn his passing six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Most recognizably in the sports world, Ash’s grandson, Alan Verlander, has been JU’s Athletic Director since 2006. During the service, Alan performed a spectacular acoustic guitar version of “Amazing Grace” and sang the lyrics. His grandfather would have been “amazingly” proud.

Glancing around the church, I saw that Ash had numerous friends, and many notable ones at that. JU basketball legend Artis Gilmore, current JU basketball head coach Cliff Warren and GBA President Rick Catlett were in attendance. Past Gator Bowl Presidents served as honorary pallbearers.

The hour-long funeral service is perfectly summed up by Ash’s grandchild Natalie Soud reading the poem “Smile (Eyes Wide Open).” After hearing the uplifting stories about Ash, it was impossible not to smile.

The sports world and this Jacksonville community were blessed to have him. He put his heart into everything, and it showed.

While leaving the service, I was saddened that I never had the opportunity to meet Ash Verlander. But, as I walked outside, I shook Chris Verlander’s hand and gave him my condolences.

He seriously looked me in the eye and said, “Richard, if you can be half the man my father was, then you’ll live a great life.”

By telling a part of Ash Verlander’s story, I hope I’m on my way.

Note: May 2012, Alan Verlander, Ash's grandson, will become the Executive Director of Sports & Entertainment for the City of Jacksonville, Florida. Ash would have been so proud of Alan.

J.T. Townsend - first interview with Miller on Sports

What are you doing Tuesday night, May 8th, after the practice rounds at the Players Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida? MAYOR BROWN DECLARES "GIANTS CHAMPIONS DAY."

It’s official. After a parade honoring the Jacksonville Giants’ 2012 ABA National Championship, Mayor Alvin Brown read a proclamation, designating May 3, 2012, as “Giants National Champions Day.” Mayor Brown announced to the players, coaches, administrative staff, and fans that the City of Jacksonville was both supportive and proud of the Giants’ success this season and the team’s accomplishments in Season Two. Team Owner Ron Sholes, Head Coach Kevin Waters, and the players accepted the 2012 ABA National Championship trophy. This is the first time in Jacksonville’s history that a Jacksonville-based professional basketball team has won a National Championship.

The parade was everything that the Giants expected and more. With Terry Parker High School’s NJROTC leading the parade, the parade started at Everbank Stadium and ended at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Showing his passion for basketball, this grand City of Jacksonville and the Giants’ team, Mayor Alvin Brown, proudly wearing a Giants’ autographed official team basketball jersey, waved from a green Model T Antique car provided by Amelia Concours D’Elegance. Richard Miller (Miller on Sports) chose to ride in another antique car, dated 1952.

Head Coach Kevin Waters and his wife Chantell, Assistant Head Coach David Graham and his wife Erica, Team Captain Anthony Lumpkin, and all the players rode behind the antique Fire Truck that carried “The Green Giant” (Nicholas Seymour), the Mascot of Miller on Sports. Local talent and fan favorite Antonio (“Red”) Lawrence, who always provides the extra entertainment for the fans of the Giants’ games, was riding in the jump seat of one of the antique cars. Renaldo Norman, another fan favorite, brought an unexpected guest, his brother, Josh Norman, who was recently drafted by the NFL to play for the Carolina Panthers, as a cornerback.

Upon arriving at the Arena, The Voice of the Giants, Richard Miller, officially opened the festivities by welcoming Mayor Alvin Brown, Team Owner Ron Sholes, Head Coach Kevin Waters, the players, and fans. Showing appreciation to the players and his coaching staff, Head Coach Waters accepted the 2012 ABA National Championship Trophy for the team. As Waters’ coaching staff and the players held the Trophy high in the air so all the fans could see, the crowd cheered. It was highly apparent how proud the City of Jacksonville is of the team’s accomplishments. In reading the Proclamation, Mayor Alvin Brown vowed that he will be back next year for more Jacksonville Giants Basketball.

Showing his love for the team’s Mascot, Mayor Brown recognized MR. Biggs and called him up to the stage to join the team. Immediately following the Trophy Presentation and team photographs, the players and coaches signed T-shirts and posters that were provided free to the fans by the Law Offices of Ron Sholes and Eastport Apartments, the official housing partner of the Jacksonville Giants. The Special Formula Band entertained the crowd, as the fans enjoyed the celebration well into the evening.

ABA National Champions Jacksonville Giants Celebrate Today With Citywide Parade

Mayor Brown Proclaims Thursday, May 3, 2012, Giants Day With Downtown Parade Celebration

How often does a parade include free food? Children 12 and under will eat free after the Jacksonville Giants parade on Thursday. Ron Sholes, Team Owner of the Giants, exclaimed, “We are National ABA Basketball Champions! It’s the first time in the history of Jacksonville, Florida. It is now appropriate to celebrate with a parade, trophy presentation, and celebratory gathering to thank our fans and to congratulate our players, coaches, administrative staff, and volunteers who have devoted tireless hours to the success of this organization.”

On April 15, 2012, the ABA Jacksonville Giants won the ABA National Championship by winning two games of the Championship Series against the undefeated South Carolina Warriors. Head Coach Kevin Waters commented, “It was a weekend to remember and a season in the history books. It is now time to show our fans and the City of Jacksonville how much we truly appreciate the love and support that was needed to take this team to this championship level.”

The parade will take place at 5:00 p.m., beginning at Everbank Stadium. There will be plenty of free parking on the Everbank Stadium grounds. The parade route begins at Everbank Stadium and takes a short run up Bay Street turning north onto A. Philip Randolph Street and coming to the final stop at the front of the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

Host Richard Miller (Miller on Sports) will introduce Mayor Alvin Brown, who will congratulate the Champions and read the City of Jacksonville Proclamation, designating May 3, 2012, as “Giants ABA National Championship Day.”

The Giants have created a one-of-a-kind Giant Championship Poster, which will be given away FREE to the first 500 in attendance. The Championship team, along with additional players who aided in the Giants’ success throughout the season, will be present. NBA Legend Christian Laettner is expected to attend. Laettner, as well as Mike Polite and Currye Todd, created the team’s first ever buzzer beater, which won Game One of Season Two, held December 3, 2011. Polite and Todd are also expected to attend Thursday’s festivities.

The National Champion Giants team will hold a FREE autograph session immediately following the trophy presentation. Fans will be invited to hold the trophy for any photographs they wish to take. Professional photographers will be on site for the trophy presentation. Coupons good for $50 off the National Champion Giants Summer Camp will be available at the autograph table. EIGHT of '94 CHARGER SUPER BOWL CONTENDERS HAVE DIED PREMATURELY

It is another sad day for the NFL and fans of Junior Seau. The former NFL linebacker that played for 20 seasons was loved by all who knew him. According to authorities, Seau died of what they are calling "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest." He was discovered by his girlfriend who called 911. She reported that he was unconscious when she entered the room.

Seau played for the Chargers the longest (13 seasons) but also played for the Dolphins and Patriots.

What is strange is Seau makes the 8th San Diego Charger player on the 1994 stellar team to die before reaching 45 years of age. That year the Chargers gave it their all to reach the Super Bowl. No one believed that the team could be a contender to even reach the playoffs. In the end, the Chargers faced the 49ers and lost by a score of 49-26.

Tall Ships Leave Jacksonville, Florida: Racing to Nova Scotia

On Monday, April 30, 2012, the French Navy training schooner Etoile (“star”) along with her sister ship, La Belle Poule (“Beautiful Chick”) sailed into downtown Jacksonville to commemorate Captain Jean Ribault’s landing in the New World 450 years ago. On May 1, 1562, Ribault’s expedition landed at the mouth of the St. John’s River, and now the National Park Service’s Fort Caroline Memorial commemorates this history.

The ships have been participating in the Tall Ship Race since 1958. In 2009, the Etoile and La Belle Poule crossed the Atlantic Ocean for the first time during the Tall Ship Atlantic Challenge. In recognition of their service during World War II, both vessels are permitted to fly the French ensign with the imposed Cross of Lorraine.

Miller on Sports was downtown on Wednesday morning, May 2nd, to watch as the ships left their docking stations in front of the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Jacksonville. Very few people were up early for their grand departure. With such spectacular weather and a very calm St. Johns River, their excursion up the river against the backdrop of Jacksonville’s South Bank was a sight to behold.

Both ships are now headed to Savannah, Georgia, for the Tall Ships Challenge, an annual event organized by Tall Ships America, alternating in a three-year cycle among the Great Lakes, the Pacific, and the Atlantic coasts of North America. Tall Ships America is a nonprofit group focused on leadership development, youth education, and the preservation of the maritime heritage of North America.

The organization encourages character building through sailing training. Many of the vessels that are participating in the challenge serve as classrooms at sea and are manned by crews, ranging in ages from 13 to 25. These young students are enrolled in sailing programs with Tall Ships America. In the images with this story, you can see some of the crew members as they work tirelessly to ensure a safe departure from Jacksonville.

The event attracts thousands of onlookers to witness the beauty and grace of these Tall Sailing Ships. The event provides a very special opportunity for the attendees to interact with the crews of the vessels as they race from port to port.

With the arrival of 13 high-masted sailing ships and one special little tug boat, the 2012 Tall Ships Challenge in Savannah begins on Thursday, May 3, 2012. The event ends on Monday, May 7^th, with the Parade of Sail, as the vessels set out to sea from River Street to begin an ocean race that will end in Nova Scotia, Canada, in July.

Youtube: One Trillion Videos Watched in 2011 by Miller on Sports

While Miller on Sports did not watch one trillion Youtube videos, other viewers did.

SPECIAL MILLER ON SPORTS REPORT: ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, AND EVERY OTHER NETWORK IN THE WORLD SHOULD BEWARE. There is definite competition through Youtube videos.

If you watched a Youtube video in the past week, you were not alone. It seems that millions of you have taken a moment from your day to view a Youtube clip or full video. It should not come as a surprise since Youtube has the most up-to-date catalog of videos accessible worldwide. The latest edited television and cable news stories are weaklings compared to the real news feed presented on Youtube.

Recently, Miller on Sports began uploading daily interviews onto its own Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/milleronsports. And, in a brief period of time, Miller on Sports videos have racked up approximately 40,000 views. Seemingly, this is the magic number that causes a multiplier to kick in so that thousands of more viewers will be informed of the Miller on Sports channel.

Miller On Sports posts a variety of videos on its channel, ranging from sports and entertainment to community news. For examples, there are videos of radio interviews (with professional athletes, authors, organizers of charitable events, and local celebrities), kite surfing, and remote control boating, to name only a few. According to Youtube news, the statistics are as follows:
Sixty hours of video are uploaded to its site every minute.
Four billion videos are viewed every day.

800 million unique viewers.
Three billion hours of Youtube video hours are watched per month.

The question is whether NBC, CBS, and ABC can compete in this market. To date, Youtube has uploaded more content in one month than the three networks combined have created in the past 60 years. Amazingly, the United States does not qualify for top Youtube viewership. Seventy percent of Youtube traffic originates from outside the United States. Youtube is available in 54 languages and reaches 39 countries.

In 2011, Youtube views totaled 1 trillion. That is almost 140 views for every man, woman, and child in the world. Another fascinating feature about the Youtube channel is that it will not cancel your show any time soon. Youtube never deletes a show.

Over 100 million people have LIKED, SHARED, or COMMENTED on a Youtube video while using Facebook or Google Plus in the past week.

Jacksonville Beach - Open for Business

Miller on Sports was at the beach on Saturday to witness spectacular weather. Sunny, clear skies, 85 to 90 degrees with a cool breeze. Water temperature: 70 degrees. Surf: 1 to 2 feet.

The beaches (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach) officially opened for summertime fun on Saturday, April 28, 2012. Although the beaches are available for public use all year long, many beachgoers wait for the annual "opening of the beaches" before they pack up the car with the cooler, dog, children, fried chicken, chairs, and beach towels. With the official opening of the beaches come the lifeguards, a parade, a sand sculpting competition, concessions and concerts. Maybe there is a direct correlation between the end of March Madness and the NFL draft and the official opening of the beaches!

Thousands of beachgoers flooded the beaches. Parking was at a premium, as those arriving desperately searched for the perfect parking space.

NEPTUNE BEACH

The popular pastimes at the beach included biking, surfing, swimming, sand sculpting, bocce ball, corn hole, baseball, football, soccer, Frisbee throwing, kites, surf fishing, skim boarding, body surfing, boating, ladder ball, sunbathing and people watching. The noticeable difference between the official opening day and any other beach day was the number of organized groups enjoying the day together.

JACKSONVILLE BEACH

Driving on the beach is no longer permitted within the city limits of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, or Atlantic Beach. In the past, the beaches allowed drivers to park and drive their cars on the beach. At that time, beachgoers could enjoy a leisurely drive on the wide, hard-packed sands. It was truly a sight to see and a parade of its own. With cars permitted on the beach at that time, families could stuff their cars with food, coolers, and anything else that made the day more pleasant. But, due to health and welfare concerns (oil from the cars polluting the beaches and accidents involving cars and pedestrians), parking and driving on the beaches were discontinued.

When driving was permitted on the beaches, it became a pastime for many beachgoers to either help drivers with stranded cars or just watch cars sink deeper in the sand. Not understanding the beach tides and how quickly the conditions can change, many tourists were caught off-guard when they would park their cars and not monitor the tide. While distracted by other pastimes, tourists or unsuspecting natives would fail to see the tide roll in and sink the car in the sand. The salt water would literally slosh around the car, and the tide would dig the tires deeper into the sand. Of course, Monster truck owners became the heroes and would wait to be summoned to assist. In some cases, cars drifting into the ocean's waves have bobbled in the surf until the tow truck could be called to save the day. If you are interested in driving on the beach, it still permitted at Daytona Beach (birthplace of auto racing) and New Smyrna Beach areas, a Volusia County tradition dating back to the early days of the automobile. Those beaches post rules and regulations in an effort to ensure that all beachgoers and their cars remain safe and secure.

SAND SCULPTING CONTEST

On Saturday, Jacksonville Beach hosted its annual sand sculpting contest in front of the Sea Walk Pavilion. A Jacksonville Beach native's horse in the sand won "Best in Show" as the top prize.

On Sunday, May 13, 2012, Jacksonville Beach will host "Pops at the Beach" in honor of Mother's Day from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. The concert will feature Goliath Flores at 6:00 p.m. and the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Limited preferred seating available.
